This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to review and use recognised conservation principles and practice to conserve heritage leadlight and stained glass through preservation, restoration or reconstruction under the principles determined by the Australia International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) Burra Charter. It includes the requirement to update condition reports on the conserved panel.

This unit applies to individuals working with designed glass.

Licensing, legislative or certification requirements may apply to this unit and relevant state/territory and local government agencies should be consulted to determine any necessary certification or licensing for undertaking glass and glazing work. Access to construction sites requires certification of general induction training specified by the National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work (ASCC 2007).

Assessment Tasks

Copy and paste from the following data to produce each assessment task. Write these in plain English and spell out how, when and where the task is to be carried out, under what conditions, and what resources are needed. Include guidelines about how well the candidate has to perform a task for it to be judged satisfactory.
Copy and paste from the following performance criteria to create an observation checklist for each task. When you have finished writing your assessment tool every one of these must have been addressed, preferably several times in a variety of contexts. To ensure this occurs download the assessment matrix for the unit; enter each assessment task as a column header and place check marks against each performance criteria that task addresses.

Identify and follow work health and safety, legislative and organisational requirements 
Conduct detailed inspections of the heritage leadlight and stained glass based on existing condition reports and verify conservation requirements 
Identify, confirm and clarify conservation requirements with appropriate personnel 
Identify conservation sequence and develop a work plan with approval of relevant people 
Position and check tools and equipment prior to use to ensure they are appropriate for the task, serviceable and in a safe condition 
Position plans and other documents to allow for confirmation of the panel structure 
Make outline rubbings to confirm design during the process 
Take photographs of the panel before during and after the inspection for later reference 
Complete conservation cleaning on relevant components in consultation with relevant personnel and specialist technical experts 
Confirm decisions on conservation methods in consultation with relevant people 
Select and prepare replacement materials using established techniques 
Conduct measurements and tests to confirm conservation plan 
Assemble panel and check against original data. 
Inspect conserved leadlight and stained glass panel for quality of work 
Take photographs of the completed conservation prior to packaging and transportation 
Remove, clean and store tools and equipment appropriately 
Clean conservation area and dispose of rubbish in accordance with environmental requirements 
Package and store panel prior to movement and installation 
Prepare and provide required conservation reports to relevant people.
